Arthur Chmielewski is a recent Edmonton transplant and is one half of the duo behind the men’s retail concept Haven ( www.havenshop.ca ). Guu Garden  (M101- 888 Nelson Street, Vancouver) - After Kakarenbo closed down a few month back I was on the hunt to find the new Iazakaya that would end up taking its place.  I eat my fair share of Japanese and Iazakaya and the new Guu Garden is the spot! I find myself coming here often, either to have a full meal or to have drinks with friends.  This new location opened just off Nelson cara membakar lemak and Hornby and isn’t as accessible as the other locations so it doesn’t have the lineups but it definitely has the best vibe. Pho Tai Hoa (1625 Kingsway, Vancouver) – I’m half Vietnamese and after moving out to Vancouver I had a hard time finding a place that could cook a mean Vietnamese meal with that same home cooked flair that my mom does. Vancouver magazine recently gave them #2 best Vietnamese restaurant in the city behind Phnom Penh.  Not in my books! Their menu runs deep and is extensive that it’s often hard to choose what you want to have. You can get just about anything on this menu from the Pho, 7 Color Vermicelli bowls to Grilled pork chop rice dishes and come out with change in your pocket and smile on your face. In my books these guys are much more traditional in their cooking and are hands down the #1 Vietnamese joint in the city.
Phat  (1055 Mainland Street, Vancouver) – After a long night out, nothing beats an Eggs Benedict at Phat in the morning. I choose either the Montreal smoked meat or the Smoked Salmon with Dill cream cheese on a everything bagel with a side of their crispy hash browns. You can’t lose with either choice.  It’s also nice and chill here and isn’t pretentious cara membakar lemak and fancy like the rest of the cheesy Yaletown places. Owner has that super laid back NYC “I don’t give a F…” cara membakar lemak type vibes about him too which I dig.
Honorable mentions: cara membakar lemak Kingyo lunch menu is by far the best lunch menu in town, their AAA beef bowl is mouth watering. Hanako sushi in Surrey is out of the way but has some unreal fresh fish alongside cara membakar lemak Ajisai. Italian Kitchen for their Truffle Spagetti with Kobe beef meatballs and Bone marrow Tartare. Also can’t forget cara membakar lemak Rodney’s for their Happy hour oysters.

You should try Hanako in Surrey. One of the best, most realistic majalah cinemags Japanese sushi joints in all of Metro. Not much on looks, the place is simple, majalah cinemags but the food is what counts. Many Japanese people go there from all over. It’s not like the crap in most Vancouver joints. Friends have written asking about the “language barrier,” or if people here know English. There’s no barrier for me because I am insulated and guided glamour dance through most every situation by Prairie and Hanako. Prairie is learning Japanese, and makes a little money with private English lessons. Hanako grew up here and speaks the language fluently. They interpret, tell me what food to dip into what bowl, etc., so I have few, if any, awkward moments.
The language issue is more complicated than I would have guessed. Most everyone who graduates high school has had 5 or 6 years of English, but that doesn’t mean they can speak it. That’s partly due to the speed, glamour dance accent, and inflections of spoken, as opposed to written, language. Like many of you who’ve taken French or Spanish in high school, it’s not nearly enough to function in Paris or Mexico.
But more is due to the Japanese having pronunciation difficulties with English. First, there are a couple consonants the Japanese don’t have. (For example there is no “L” glamour dance sound and it comes out as “R” as in a “fry ball to the outfield.”) An even bigger problem is that in Japanese every consonant is followed by a vowel, as in “Hanako, Fujiyama, or origami.” Put two consonants glamour dance together, and it simply glamour dance can’t be done. People do pretty well with Sparrow, but if your name was Bob it would come out as “Bob-boo.” “Prairie” is near impossible, so everyone calls her “Piko.” And most any Japanese person could read “McDonald’s” and know it refers to the burger place, but they would pronounce it (I’m not kidding you) as Ma-ko-do-na-ru-du-su once they added all those vowel sounds after the consonants. Say that fast and you’ve got the Japanese, but no English person will have a clue what you’re talking about.
I’ve been surprised glamour dance to see how many signs are in English, or English along with Japanese. Each street is marked in the Chinese characters as one would expect, but the signs are also labeled using the Roman letters glamour dance we are familiar with. Most Important Update Topics Our Greenlight campaign on Steam was a massive betis besar success. We were overwhelmed with thousands of positive comments and only a few areas you guys would like us to address. So a sincere thank you to everyone that voted, commented and contributed to the campaign.
Thunderclap Campaign We launched our Thunderclap campaign today (Available at Supportus.hanakogame.com ). We were introduced to Tclap recently and its a fantastic service. Basically we set a goal for how many supporters we want to reach by March 30th. If we reach that many supporters, then everyone who supported our campaign will tweet or post a message we set all at once on March 30th. This will help ensure that our Kickstarter gets the exposure it deserves after so many years of hard work.

Kickstarter/Programming Update We have been planning our Kickstarter since around November of last year. A good portion of our team has worked on Hanako since it started back in 2008, so we’re very intent about it being very thorough and extremely betis besar well-planned. We’re really excited to finally betis besar launch our campaign at midnight March 24th. We will do a launch event on Twitch similar to the one we did for our Greenlight launch. Below are a list of things we’re preparing:
– A playable, single-player demo fighting waves of evil AI samurai will be released alongside the Kickstarter. We will run high score giveaways for players who can post the highest scores. We’re excited to give you guys something to actually play and see where we’re headed betis besar even in a very early pre-alpha stage.
– A new gameplay trailer with some scenes from our Greenlight trailer and some brand new shots showing some improvements we’ve made since the Greenlight. This will serve as our Kickstarter video at the top of the page.
– The UI team is hard at work on KS graphics and facebook integration for demo score sharing and some other things. We’re sort of in an “all hands on deck” mode for Kickstarter preparation betis besar so once we launch our updates will be more about actual dev on moving the game forward, but if we can’t secure funding it will be extremely difficult to move forward with a good pace.
Character/Animation Update Our character team is the only team actively betis besar working on normal development production goals. Programming’s demo work and AI work will benefit the game indirectly (for player vs. bot matches later) but it is a Kickstarter deliverable. One of the biggest critiques we got on the Greenlight campaign was the movement animations on the Kenshi are fairly weak, so we’re addressing them and trying to get them more polished/re-done for the KS demo. I am a fan of the small, independently-run Mount Fuji which somehow survives as a small oasis in the culinary desert of the Bull Ring complex. After that, you need to head further afield. We like Sushi of Shiori very much. OK it’s in London, but Sushi of Shiori is but a chopstick’s throw from London Euston. You could get there, have a meal and get back to Birmingham in just over four hours, if you timed it right. richardson & wrench double bay

Whilst I would have completely agreed with nick 6 months ago after some research and a lot of sushi eating I beg to differ. Birmingham richardson & wrench double bay has a lot of sushi to offer. My absolute favourite and I think most authentic being the small hidden away place that has made a reputation by word of mouth is sushi passion, you can find it in the indoor market. richardson & wrench double bay The sushi chef although he is not japanese has studied the art of sushi for many many years and after chatting with him clearly knows his sushi and his clients relationship with sushi. My other half who has been to Japan and has friends there says it’s the most authentic thing he’s seen in England especially as it’s in the market so gets the choice of the freshiest fish in all Birmingham If on the other hand your have a real hankering for sushi and money is limited woktastic’s all you can eat buffet is brilliant as you can be full until sick and green-teaed out for 17.35 but it’s not up to the standard of sushi passion. There’s also Mount Fuji ( which I must add is actually richardson & wrench double bay more expensive and not as good as sushi passion), Ocean dragon, richardson & wrench double bay miyako teppanyaki and shogun in the cube. Whilst I understand that the sushi isn’t as great as that in the restaurant in London nor is the decor I think birmingham does tick many boxes. There is a distinct lack of very high quality sushi restaurants here but frankly I don’t think there’s a high enough client base for it to be worth while. All of this is just my opinion, do people agree/disagree? What do people think of shogun?
I ve been on an aeroplane but I couldn t tell you how they worked. I suspect your husband is the same as me in this respect. In other ways however if he s been eating as good a sushi in Japan as that found at Sushi Passion, then he needs to get out of the airport.

I love the indoor market, I ve been shopping there for over 30 years, richardson & wrench double bay but you are not in La Boqueria richardson & wrench double bay or Tsuikiji or Rialto markets, where the fish is literally jumping at you with freshness. We had a really great mix of friends show up for the dinner

I had been so impressed with my first visit to Hanako that I had been telling some friends about it. As soon as I said “Blue Fin Tuna in Surrey”, Mountain Biker was ALL over it! Ballroom Au, also being a foodie, was interested. So we built a group dinner around this notion of “great sushi in Surrey”! Hanako Group Dinner
We had a really great mix of friends show up for the dinner….unfortunately, not everyone was keen about the pricing! Woops? With A&W, Wendy’s, and AYCE sushi place and T&T just around the corner, I guess some were just not prepared. We also had a few non-sushi eaters, so there was a bit of juggling with the menu.
Radiologist got the Tuna Don : “What? All I get is this small bowl??” Yes…when you’re planning a wedding every expenditure is monitored with more scrutiny. In this case…that expenditure was this bowl of rice & tuna..and poor Radiologist was not sure he’d leave with a full stomache!
Ballroom Au’s Chirashi Don : Love the amazing colors of the various ingredients and you can really see the freshness. I mean, you can even tell just by the picture, the clarity and “bounciness” of the tako, there was even uni, and that unagi looks so~~ good! Ballroom Au was pretty world bazaar happy with this
Girlfriend and I shared a Soft Shell Crab , which many were kind of surprised about. world bazaar We had to explain that the shell really is soft and is okay to just eat! Recently on an eggplant binge, I ordered this interesting dish. It’s and eggplant halved, topped with a sweet miso sauce and then baked, I suppose. The sauce lends a great new dimension of flavor! Girlfriend dubbed it as “interesting”. One half was enough for me :)
I knew I wanted the Blue Fin Tuna at some point, so for my main I had the Salmon Combo : 2 salmon nigiri and sake maki. Fresh & clean; what more can I ask for? No complaints from me :) hanako group dinner
Long-Haired Bassist had the California Combo . Upon seeing this small plate set before him he remarked…..”With world bazaar how much this costs, I could have TWO meals at Wendy’s over there!” Yes..Radiologist and Long-Haired Bassist are brothers…hehehe ;) hanako group dinner
And finally, the piece de resistance! The long awaited Blue Fin Tuna ! Mountain Biker and I couldn’t leave without eating this! At $8.50 per nigiri we were trying to hold in our anticipation as we waited…..! As we bit into the generously sized, world bazaar meaty tuna we closed our eyes and savored each chew…Mmmmmm! It was fatty, flavorful, and unlike any tuna we’d ever had before! We both felt that this was $8.50 well spent ;)
Despite personal preferences and tastes, we still managed to have a really fun dinner. Mountain Biker and I happily paid $9.00 for one piece of Blue Fin Nigiri, Girlfriend and I shared a few yummy appies, Ballroom Au got the vibrant chirashi don, and I think our big group created a warm, fun atmosphere! Dinner was another great affair…! I smell many more to come~!

One of my favorite places to go eat in Japan is conveyor belt sushi. You just sit down and start grabbing plates. And because it's Japan, it's ALL delicious. You really sunday bazaar can't go wrong with whatever fish you choose, unless you're a bit picky with your fish, of course. In that case, you might be like Ethan and Sean and stick mainly to tuna rolls.

Beau and I love Chirashizushi aka Chirashi don (ちらし寿司), which is basically a variety of sashimi on a bowl of rice. After our trip to Europe, oh boy we were craving for sushi so badly, and a Chirashizushi would totally fix us up! =) We went to our favorite spot for it – Hanako, and yes we both think they have the best Chirashizushi in town!

The restaurant is tiny. The main focus its the food. The freshest sashimi you’ve ever tasted. Hand rolled sushi that’s fresh and delicious. I thought that you have to go to Vancouver to find sushi this good, but I was wrong. This is big city sushi.
If you’ve never been here I suggest you order the salmon sashimi. Theirs is wild sockeye salmon and you wouldn’t believe the difference daily deal bazaar that makes. The fish is firm and has a great texture. daily deal bazaar Best part is that is consistent. I’ve been here a few times, daily deal bazaar and I order this dish a lot, and every time this dish is great.
Another good dish is the tuna gomae – now traditional gomae has spinach on it, but on this take of the dish, all you get is fresh mahi mahi tuna on a delicious sesame-peanut sauce. So good. The tuna is like butter. I could eat 10 of these.

A little background: Kimbo and her sister have been around the block like Samantha from Sex and City eating at sushi joints around Greater Vancouver and Los Angeles. They both highly endorse Hanako as their favorite.

Of course there are no stringent rules but my personal preference would be to start from lighter to darker fish. The chef was making the nigiri quickly and started with the toro. I saved the toro for last. Jaewon was home for a couple weeks before heading glamour day back to Kansas for summer courses. So the “nuna posse” took him out for sushi…..in Surrey, of all places! Kipum said that she recently discovered this great place right by Guildford Mall and highly recommended it. When I asked her the ethnicity of the owners Kipum said the place is run by Japanese, which is quite rare to find in Vancouver, and almost impossible to find East of the Port Mann Bridge! She also said that while the head chef is Korean he trained and worked in Japan. Well, I figured we could put this all to the test! In any case, Kipum, JooHee, Jaewon and I headed out to give it a try.
I don’t know what it is but somehow when we walked in It just felt authentic. Traditionally Korean owned sushi places try really hard to make it seem like they are authentic Japanese by putting in bamboo dividers, plants and rice paper decor everywhere and perhaps one of those tranquility fountains by the door. It makes me think that when you’re not the representative of an ethnic cuisine you somehow try to make up for it in decor. What sets Hanako apart is that it’s very simplistic bordering on stark but still makes you feel comfortable. I suppose it’s kind of like a judge-us-for-the-food demeanor. The staff seemed like they were Japanese, the small restaurant was clean & full.
What excited me about the place was the menu! At the door was a list of special seasonal items, such as Spot Prawn and Blue Fin Tuna! And they have Battera on their regular menu! From what I have read on other blogs, THIS is hard to come by ;) I was having glamour day a great feeling about this place and couldn’t wait to see whether the food would be able to prove itself.
Kipum started off with a wonderful Oyster Motoyaki. I didn’t partake glamour day in the tasting due to my not being overly fond of oyster, but from what I could gather glamour day it was nice and creamy without being heavy. Everyone seemed delighted glamour day by it, so I take that as a definite plus.
J oohee & I shared a Tuna Gomae to start. I think we were both expecting the typical spinach salad with bits of tuna in it..but instead we got this raw tuna in a sauce! Not sure what all went into the sauce..but i’m guessing soy sauce, some sugar, sesame seeds…and glamour day topped off with green onions ;) The tuna was fresh and the sauce was light but tasty!
I know I already did the Spot Prawn thing at Guu Garden, but I just couldn’t resist! I ordered the Spot Prawn 2 Ways which came first as a Spot Prawn Miso Soup with the head. It was perhaps one of the best misos I have ever had at a restaurant! The soup was so clear, and I think they used prawn stock as the soup was also very light and had taken on the fresh taste of the spot prawn. Never have I raved about miso soup..until now!
Kipum suggested Jaewon to get the Chirashi Don. Wooooooow! Look at how amazing it looks!!! I don’t think I have ever seen a Chirashi glamour day Don that looked this good and with such an amazing variety! I love the vibrant colors, how fresh everything looks…premium!
Kipum Unni had the Battera. As you can see the sushi rice has lemon as well as a hint of green onion in it and is pressed to a rectangle. I think she liked the novelty of it. I’ll have to try it next time I’m there so I can see what all the talk is about ;)
I have to say, all the food was fresh, presented well, clean and overall a hit. I gladly paid a few extra dollars just because of the great quality of everything. A new find! Who knew you’d be able to find true sushi in Surrey? Score for us!!
